New English Language Tests Accepted for Australian Visas

The Australian Department of Home Affairs has announced an update to the accepted English language tests for visa applications, offering more choices for individuals aiming to live, work, or study in Australia. This is a positive development, providing our clients with greater flexibility in meeting the necessary English language requirements.

For tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, the department will recognize a broader selection of tests. This change is crucial information for anyone currently preparing or planning their Australian visa application.

The newly accepted tests, which must be completed at a secure test centre, along with a general indication of the scores often required (please note that specific score requirements can vary depending on the visa subclass, so it’s essential to check the exact requirements for your visa type), include:

  • Cambridge C1 Advanced Test (C1 Advanced)Generally, a score in the range of 169-179 may be considered evidence of proficient English.
  • Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program General (CELPIP General)Typically, a score of 7 or higher in each component may indicate functional English, with higher scores needed for higher proficiency levels.
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic, including One Skill Retake (OSR) – A minimum overall band score of 6.0 is often required for many visas, with specific band scores for each component (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking).
